Here in Hampton Roads, Virginia, many of us enjoy membership in "Freecycle", a network of folks who give and get things as needed. I feel pretty sure Freecycle is available or can be started up anywhere, not just here in VA. It's original intent was to keep usable items out of landfills. The secondary benefit is that you can get rid of things you no longer need or want, as long as you're completely honest about the item's condition and there's someone out there who wants it. You can also request something you're in need of, and see whether anyone in the network has one to offer. The receivers are generally expected to pick up the item. Each Freecycle network is confined within one city or county, but there's probably a way to expand outside of your particular jurisdictional area. I have given away many usable items to others who were grateful to get them. I've also received some things that I needed and could scarcely afford to buy at the time. Go to Freecycle.com to see whether there's a network in your area, or find out how to start one. In this economy, it could be a God-send.
